Resolutions? The new New Year Resolution(s)

The new year is a time where we set goals for things we want to accomplish. Many have resolutions like lose weight or save money. I just cant bare to set another goal to accomplish when I will probably  change my mind about whats important to me in a month or so anyway. Also, lets be real and admit that these types of resolutions rarely see follow through.

A few days ago I was browsing YouTube and came across a woman who set 12 projects that she wanted to accomplish for the year, one for each month. This happens to be something that has my name written all over it.

Here are 12 projects that I want to do this year:

  1. type all my favorite recipes up an print onto index cards
  2. use the above typed recipes to make a menu board. The board will have all my menu items written down on it and my recipe cards for each attached.
  3. I need some large art so I want to do this: http://diana212m.blogspot.com/2013/09/emptying-gestures.html I have a large wall and this is just so beautiful, I know I will have fun doing it too!
  4. I have been wanting to get a large rug to go in our living room, but i’m not willing to pay a ton of money. I want to make something like this: http://www.finecraftguild.com/eco-friendly-bath-mat-fun-diy-project-to-do-in-the-easter-break/ . I want to use other materials instead of old towels. not sure of the specifics yet.
  5. I want to make myself a new tote bag.
  6. Patch up the knees of husbands jeans. This is the tutorial I will use to do my repairs: http://youtu.be/CaXCC3k8_8g
  7. write a childrens story. This is something I have been wanting to try my hand at.
  8. make some decorative pillows for the couch and chair. This is a good reference tutorial for what I want to do: http://www.ourlakelife.com/2012/01/09/lake-house-style-easy-peasy-envelope-back-pillow-tutorial/
  9. I want to make a pretend midwifery kit for my kids to use when I decide to have a third baby.
  10. I need to make one of these:  http://giftedkids.about.com/od/seasonalholidayideas/ig/Snow-Creatures/Fallen-Snowman.htm Why? It looks so fun.
  11. I want to do this tutorial for a mirror to hang up: http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2012/05/15-diy-mirror.html Another decorative item.
  12. I want to make some art depicting rats. I LOVE rats and oddly don’t have any pieces of art with rats as a theme.

Here it is, 12 things I hope to accomplish in 2014. Let me know about things that you want to accomplish, I would love to hear them.

New Years Celebration:

We are yet to decide how we will celebrate or our New Years Eve.  Honestly, we will probably rent some movies from the red box, have some snacks and sparkling apple cider or soda. Diner will be nothing special.

On New Years Day I will make a traditional styled dinner to bring fortune. I researched and decided that we would do something simple: black eyed peas, greens, corn bread and steak. Ohh yeah. We will be having kale as our green which represents money, black eyed peas which represent coins, corn bread represents gold and I chose steak because its just so darn tasty. I will have to make a cake too.

I do hope you all have a safe, fun and festive New Year and let me know how you celebrate it!

Happy New Year!

Creating a Menu for my Family, A Labor of Love.

First off, I love to cook. Thus, meal planning is not really a chore to me.

I have boards on my Pintrest  page dedicated to main dishes, sides, salads, breads and desserts. I even have one for dips and sauces and another for beverages. I pin while nursing my son so When I sit down to plan my menu I begin by perusing my pins. I plan on a different paper than my final draft menu and begin by outlining my main dishes. I finish up by rounding off each dinner with sides and trimmings. I like to add in variety so we always have at least two Asian nights and two Mexican nights. After meeting these requirements I am free to put in what ever else I desire. since its been cold I’ve been doing soups, but my current menu I’m working on has a variety of sandwiches.

as for finding recipes, I’m a seasoned cook so I know what to do almost instinctively. I find a recipe that I like, or maybe Four and then I combine parts that I like and discard the parts that I don’t.

Honestly, I couldn’t follow a recipe if I tried. To me cooking like creating art, there isn’t a set way or rules for what to do. No structure allowed! It has to flow and it becomes what it is. My cooking is a barometer of my mood.

once while I was in college I was beginning a clay pottery class and each student got to talk about art and basically introduce them self. when It came to my turn I boldly announced that food was my favorite and the best form of art. This was something that caused the heads of all the seasoned potters pop up. one of the gentlemen asked me why I felt that way. Well, food effects all of our senses. First, we eat with our eyes. Second, we smell it and this gives us a good impression of what our food will taste like. Next, we get to taste it and unlike other forms of art this will most often taste good. Fourth, we can sometimes hear it. think about fajitas! Number Five, we can touch our food with our fingers and mouths. and lastly food not only nourishes our soul but it nourishes our body we will die with out it.

Perhaps its my passion for food and cooking that makes me feel this way. Maybe artists of different mediums can make a similar argument for their passions.

I stand firm on my stance however. its been about 5 years since I took that class and though clay is a pretty sweet medium to work with I will take my food, the best  and my forever favorite form of art.

What is your passion? Do you like to craft with paper? Clay? Wood? Words? Make an argument for it, What is it that makes it THE BEST!

Whats going on at the moment.

Intro about me– I’m a stay at home mom of 2 boys (1 and 2 years). I try to keep myself busy an stick to a schedule; meals made, house cleaned, kids napped, up to date with pre-school and all other odd and ends tied up.

Weekly post: [home schooling]

Every week I begin a shape, color, animal and number for my oldest to learn. He knows his alphabet, he can count to 10 and knows a few scattered numbers up to 20, he also knows his shapes, animals and colors. While he knows these things I want to reinforce them. We also have a couple other items that we stick with each week.

our ongoing projects are letter sounds, sight words, putting sounds together to make words, values of numbers and counting. we are also exploring writing our numbers  practicing finger dexterity and learning about rhyming.

This week our shape is square, our number is 3, our color is green  and our animal is a snake.

At the moment:

After Thanksgiving and Christmas I am not too excited to plan one more holiday dinner but, what the heck. New years is upon us and I want to do a themed dinner pulling together traditions from around the world that are said to bring prosperity. I have done minor research on this topic so far  and am tentatively  planning a fish dinner (cod) and some black eyed peas, Possibly greens as well. Maybe I will get down and floury and bake. I’ve been in mood but not willing to actually do it. I think that my cooking muse is on vacation.

My meal plan for January is in the works and as always, I am surprised how I can still find new  recipes to try. We haven’t repeated a dinner in the past 9-ish weeks. I like variety and cant stand the thought of eating the same thing 2 weeks in a row.

For the future:

I have a ton of things I want to do but they have to wait. I figure that the things that matter, that I truly want to do will stay in my mind and get done. My plans include to attend a class this January and begin Volunteering as a Doula at the University of Utah hospital. If you are unfamiliar with what a Doula is then look it up on google. A Doula is a woman who attends and assists a mother during her birth in what ever way the mother requests. Doulas are great to have at births because they support the mother during one of the most difficult experiences of her life. So once you google Doula, go ahead an google other things you read and have no idea about (Midwife, placental encapsulation, water birth, home birth, birth plan) Yes this will open a whole can of worms. good luck.

Another plan on the back burner is to go back to school in the next semester. I’ve been thinking for a while and maybe its time. We will see if it works with whats going on come this spring time.

I love to craft and make things. I have been wanting to make myself a new tote purse, mine is about 6 years old. I still love it but its time to have a new one. I would also like to make more family cloth, If you don’t know what it is google it! basically its using cloth wipes instead of toilet paper. GASP! You may say, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? I have my reasons, and we already use cloth diapers and cloth wipes for the kids. Why not take the next step.

I am also wanting to crochet doilies. I am only accomplished at making scarves. I want to learn to make more fancy do-dads. I want to make make a table runner and more doilies to go under knick-nacks. I like pretty stuff and maybe I’m a tad old fashioned.

Thanks to all of you for reading. This is my first blog, it’s a learning experience and I will continue to tweak how I create my blog and what goes into it as well as making blogging a regular habit.

Please bare with me, I’m hoping to get my meal plan up soon. I want to put my meal plans up a week behind the current one so that I will have already tried each recipe and be able to review each dinner.
